Career Moms – 6 Tips to De-Stress

Guest Post By April Monterrosa

I sometimes wonder if career moms and moms in general, are superheroes. When my stepdaughter stays with us, my whole world changes drastically; from balancing being a military wife, business owner, keeping up with my blog, house chores, and everything else that goes on in my life, it gets pretty busy. I think moms tend to put everyone else’s needs first so often, that they forget about themselves. Stress, fatigue, long hours at work, not enough sleep, and totally neglecting yourself can take a toll on you more than you think. When talking with other career moms, I often ask what the biggest reason is for not taking more time out for themselves; the usual response is time. But we all get the same 24 hours in a day. So why not make it count?

Making time for yourself is the most important thing you could do.   It is vitally important for your mind, body, and your soul. Plus, if you don’t take care of yourself, who will? Here are a few tips to help you de-stress and take a breather or two from the hustle and bustle of being a career mom.

Take some deep breaths

Before you begin your day, try to squeeze in a few minutes of meditation time for you. Take a few deep breaths and tell yourself that your day will be magnificent and keep all your thoughts positive.

Avoid gossip

Every workplace has gossip; it’s draining, usually uncalled for, and there is no such thing as good gossip. When your coworkers try to get you in on the latest scoop, tell them you don’t want to know or simply get up and walk away. Hearing negative office gossip can be draining and who wants to be known as a gossiper anyway?

Take a break

Workaholics usually skip their lunch break. Whether its deadlines to meet or you just love your job so much it’s hard to break away from it, you need to make time for your break. Give your eyes a rest from looking at the computer screen all morning, give your ears some quiet time after being on the phone for hours.  Fueling up your body during lunchtime helps keep you from getting so exhausted by the end of the day.

Turn it off

When you get home, leave all that happened at work . . . at work! Turn your smartphone and devices off for a bit. Give yourself a chance to unwind, get comfortable, close out your busy day, and really enjoy being at home with your family.

Take a day off

Take the kids to school, send off the hubby to work, and slip into your most comfy pair of pajamas and enjoy having the quiet house all to yourself. Catch up on your favorite shows, splurge on your favorite snacks, take the time to condition your hair, use that face mask you bought a week ago, and just make one whole day about YOU.

Soak it all in

Before bedtime run yourself a nice relaxing lavender bath (10 drops of lavender essential oil to your bath).  The lavender will calm and relax you, the warmth of the bath will soothe your body and hopefully with the combination of the oil and warm bath, you’ll get sleepy and ready to hit the sack.

Hopefully these tips can help you pay more attention to taking care of you. How can we work as hard as we do if we are exhausted? Take some time to put your mind at ease, your body to rest, and your soul at peace.
